New pedestrian crossing means potential red light for southbound Dunkirk drivers

Winnipeg, MB- The City of Winnipeg wants drivers to know about a new pedestrian crossing signal at Dunkirk Drive and Fermor Avenue - one that means southbound drivers may now encounter a red where lights have been perpetually green for nearly six decades.
"It's important for people to know this is here now because drivers have experienced a constant green light at this intersection for 58 years," said St. Vital Councillor Brian Mayes. "We need drivers to be aware of this change."
Previously, only those turning left from Dunkirk onto Fermor would receive a red light at the southbound leg of the intersection. Northbound traffic has always experienced a red-light cycle.
Now, when a pedestrian activates the push-button crossing at either the southeast or southwest corner of the intersection, both north and southbound traffic will be stopped by a red light.
"It will likely only turn red a handful of times each day, but drivers may not be expecting it," said Mayes. "The crossing is there to make things safer for pedestrians, so we want to draw as much attention to it as possible to help ensure things are safe for everyone at this intersection."
The new pedestrian signal was designed to get pedestrians safely from southbound Dunkirk to a new Transit stop on eastbound Fermor that is expected go into service in mid-December 2024. It was installed as part of the near-complete St. Vital Bridge rehabilitation project.
