The Brazilian government welcomes the announcement of the recognition of the State of Palestine by Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and Portugal.
The decision of these countries - which is expected to be followed by others during the 80th High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly, set to begin on September 23 - highlights the growing international consensus on the need to ensure the Palestinian people's right to self-determination.
Brazil, which has recognized the State of Palestine since 2010, reaffirms its long-standing conviction that the only path to peace and stability in the Middle East lies in the implementation of the two-State solution, with an independent and viable State of Palestine coexisting side by side with Israel, in peace and security, within the 1967 borders, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
