Today, despite bipartisan opposition, the Utah legislature passed a new congressional map that once again ignores the will of Utahns and could give Republicans an unfair advantage amidst national pressure from Donald Trump for Republican legislatures to rig their congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms. The Utah map must now be approved by a state judge, who will also review a map proposed by plaintiffs who successfully argued Utah's previous map was unconstitutional.
Utah Republicans have already signaled they will appeal any ruling striking down their gerrymandered map and their legislation freshly-passed to bypass state constitutional guardrails preventing this sort of election rigging.
A reminder: recent polling shows Americans disapprove of partisan gerrymandering by double-digit margins.
In response, DNC Chair Ken Martin released the following statement:
"Utahns deserve a fair map that keeps communities connected. Utah Republicans know the map they chose doesn't pass the smell test, so they're trying to rewrite the rules mid-game to push through a partisan gerrymander. But this scheme will backfire. Utahns are furious that Republicans are trying to rig the rules, and Option C includes a prime pickup opportunity for Democrats."
