August 27 - Statement from Colorado Department of State Regarding 'Find my voter registration' Tool
Denver, August 27, 2026 - The Department of State published an update to the "find my voter registration" tool on August 14, 2026. The update was initiated to comply with new requirements in Colorado law to allow pre-registered voters aged 17 years and six months old or older to check their voter registration online.
In updating the tool to allow for new functionality required by law, an existing limit preventing access to profiles of voters who had previously requested to become confidential voters was inadvertently overridden.
The Department discovered this system issue in the late afternoon of August 25. As soon as the issue was discovered, the Department:
Reversed the update so that confidential voters' information was no longer searchable.
Identified all confidential voters whose information had been searched.
Contacted or attempted to contact each voter affected.
Put in place additional measures to ensure that this does not happen again with future updates to the tool.
In its review, the Department determined 59 confidential voter profiles were accessed during this time frame. The Department has emailed or called the 54 voters for whom contact information is available, and sent a letter to the remaining five.
The Department will continue attempting to contact impacted voters. This has impacted .04% of confidential voters. As of August 26, 2026, there are 133,449 active confidential voters in Colorado.
In addition to reversing the update, the Department is implementing additional new automated and manual testing protocols to ensure confidential voters' information will not ever be visible in this way again.
Secretary of State Jena Griswold has issued the following statement:
My office takes the confidentiality of each and every voter's data extremely seriously. I sincerely regret that this happened. My staff identified this issue, and we immediately fixed it and are continuing outreach to affected voters.
The "find my voter registration" tool has been available publicly since April 2010.
In order to access a voter profile using "find my voter registration this tool," an individual must have:
a voter's legal first and last name,
that voter's zip code, and
that voter's complete date of birth.
The voter details displayed on a non-confidential voter's profile includes their full name, birth year, Voter ID, County registration date, registration status, party affiliation, date of affiliation, and residential address.
