WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Laura Gillen (NY-04) released the following statement after voting against a continuing resolution to fund ICE and CBP.
Republicans' 'Big Beautiful Bill' funded ICE at unprecedented levels and left the agency to operate through 2029 completely unchecked. That is one of the reasons I voted against that bill. I have always believed ICE must operate within the bounds of the law and any law enforcement agency must be held accountable if they abuse their power.
Previous DHS funding bills attempted to put specific reforms in place and accountability for ICE, but after the second killing of an American citizen, it's clear that those steps are not enough.
We must hold the line and exert our power to get real, meaningful reforms of ICE immediately. The CR does nothing to accomplish those goals and I therefore could not vote for it.
Since Alex Pretti's killing, it is clear that Congress must also go further and immediately impeach Secretary Noem to bring morality and order to DHS and ensure any reforms are followed. Her lack of leadership and contemptible disregard for Americans' safety have sown chaos and stoked further violence. She must be removed from office to restore security and trust in our communities.
