M. Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, had a meeting on Tuesday 11 November with his Brazilian counterpart, Mr Mauro Vieira, on the sidelines of the G7 foreign ministers' meeting in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada.
The ministers discussed the EU-Mercosur agreement, with the French Minister reiterating the preconditions set out by President Macron for French support for the agreement, and in particular the need to finalize a robust safeguard clause with the partners in Mercosur, of which Brazil holds the presidency in 2025.
The ministers spoke about international crises, returning to the situations in Ukraine, Haiti and Venezuela and emphasizing the timeliness of coordinating closely on these challenges.
Following the meeting held between President Macron and President Lula a few days earlier, they discussed economic cooperation between Brazil and France and the prospects of strengthening their cooperation on the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking.
