Nonfunctional Turf

As part of California's broader efforts to promote sustainable landscaping and address water scarcity, there is legislation (AB1572) prohibiting the use of drinking water to irrigate nonfunctional turf in certain commercial, industrial, institutional, government, and multi-family settings.

What is nonfunctional turf?

Nonfunctional turf generally refers to grass areas that are purely decorative and not used for recreation or community activities.

Does this ban apply to residential properties?

The ban applies to common areas of homeowners associations. It does not apply to lawns at private residences.

Is assistance available to replace nonfunctional turf?

Yes, Contra Costa Water District offers the Lawn to Garden Rebate Program, which provides financial incentive for replacing turf with water-efficient landscaping. Eligible commercial, industrial, institutional, government, and multi-family properties can receive up to $20,000 per site.
