Heinrich Statement Commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) released the following statement commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month, which is celebrated from September 15 through October 15. Heinrich is a cosponsor of a bipartisan resolution recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month.

"As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we honor the remarkable impact Hispanics and Latinos have had on our country and in our communities - strengthening every part of our economic, social, and cultural fabric. In New Mexico, Hispanic heritage is not only about lifting up leaders like Senator Dennis Chávez and educator Dolores Gonzáles, but also about celebrating our New Mexico way of life - from food and art, to close familial ties, to the spirit of querencia that shapes our connection to our lands.

"But we must also do more to truly and fully celebrate Hispanic heritage in this moment: We must raise our voices and push back against this Administration's unprecedented and un-American attacks against our Hispanic and Latino communities. We cannot stand idly by as this Administration encourages federal law enforcement to stop and detain Hispanic people because of how they look, the language they speak, or where they work. And we cannot stay silent as they defund the schools, universities, and programs that support Hispanic communities, and so many others. We cannot just watch as they gut health care, kill jobs, and send everyday costs skyrocketing. We must speak out and be firm in our shared convictions.

"No one, anywhere in this country, should ever be targeted for their appearance, their language, or their ethnicity. And everyone deserves a fair shot at success, to provide for their families, grow their community, and continue to contribute to our American story.

"This month and every month, I'm committed to standing with Hispanics and Latinos to make sure their voices are heard and their dreams are within reach."
