GMA presented Governor Brian P. Kemp with the Georgia Key Citizen Award during GMA's Annual Convention in Savannah on Sunday, June 28, recognizing his steadfast support of local government and his lasting contributions to communities across the state.

Named in honor of former Atlanta Mayor James L. Key, GMA's first president and one of the founders of the association in 1933, the Georgia Key Citizen Award is the highest honor bestowed by GMA. Presented only on rare occasions, the award recognizes individuals whose leadership has strengthened communities and improved the lives of citizens throughout Georgia.

"Governor Kemp has consistently demonstrated an understanding that strong cities are essential to a strong Georgia," said Larry Hanson, CEO and Executive Director of the Georgia Municipal Association. "Throughout his service, he has recognized the critical role local governments play in creating economic opportunity, providing essential services and enhancing quality of life for Georgians in every corner of the state. His leadership and commitment to our communities make him a deserving recipient of the Georgia Key Citizen Award."

Since taking office in 2019, Governor Kemp championed policies and investments that have helped communities of all sizes and support growth and strengthen their economies. His administration has made historic investments in transportation infrastructure, ensuing that Georgia's cities remain connected and positioned to attract jobs and business investment.

Governor Kemp has also prioritized workforce housing initiatives aimed at helping communities address one of their most pressing challenges. Through programs such as the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative, his administration has supported infrastructure investments that enable communities to create housing opportunities for working families and promote long-term prosperity.

His support for the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority has further strengthened communities by providing resources for water, sewer, broadband and natural gas infrastructure projects that serve as the foundation for economic development and public health.

Throughout his tenure, Governor Kemp has also maintained a strong commitment to public safety, recognizing the essential role local governments play in protecting citizens. His administration has supported city police departments, fire departments, emergency medical services and 911 operations while helping ensure communities have the resources needed to keep residents safe.

During the COVID-19 pandemic and in the wake of hurricanes, severe storms and other emergencies, Governor Kemp worked closely with local leaders across Georgia to provide resources and support during some of the state's most challenging times. His administration's responsiveness and commitment to collaboration have helped communities navigate crises and recover stronger.

"Governor Kemp has been a steadfast partner to Georgia's cities and an advocate for the investments and policies that strengthen local communities," said Larry Hanson, CEO and Executive Director of the Georgia Municipal Association. "His leadership has helped create opportunities for economic growth, improve infrastructure and support the services that residents depend on every day. We are honored to recognize his contributions with the Georgia Key Citizen Award."

Governor Kemp's relationship with Georgia's cities extends back to his service as Secretary of State and reflects a longstanding appreciation for the role local governments play in the success of the state. His commitment to collaboration and his support for initiatives that improve the prosperity, safety and quality of life of Georgians have made a lasting impact on communities across the state.
