The College of Humanities and Fine Arts' Portuguese and Brazilian Studies Program will host two Brazilian musicians on Tuesday, Oct. 7, to celebrate Baden Powell, one of the most influential Brazilian guitar players and composers of the 20th century.
Contemporary guitarists Mauro Correa and his special guest João Camarero will first give a talk and workshop on Brazilian rhythms and the Brazilian guitar at 2:30 p.m. in Herter Hall 301. At 6:30 p.m., Correa and Camarero will present a concert in Herter Hall 231.
Powell's work combines classical guitar techniques with Afro-Brazilian traditions, and it has become a symbol of Brazilian guitar music worldwide. Correa is an eclectic Brazilian musician who has lived and performed in Germany, Mexico, and Argentina. He currently runs a teaching studio in Northampton and performs across the U.S. Camarero is one of the most acclaimed guitarists in Brazil. He has performed on stage and in the studio with numerous artists, including Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Ney Matogrosso, Dori Caymmi, Paulinho da Viola, Francis Hime and others. He is a reference in Choro music, as well as other contemporary Brazilian styles, including Brazilian Jazz and Samba.
The events are sponsored by the UMass Amherst Spanish and Portuguese Studies Program, the Lidia Jorge Chair in Portuguese Studies, the Luso-American Foundation and the Camões Institute.
Both events are free and open to the public.
