Washington, D.C. - The Main Street Competition Coalition today expressed support for the Committee Reportaccompanying the latest minibus, H.R. 7006, the FY26 Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) appropriations legislation funding the Federal Trade Commission.
The Committee Report includes language championed by Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-AL) urging the FTC to fully utilize its existing statutory authorities to promote competition in the grocery, pharmacy, and retail sectors:
Retail Competition.-The Committee recognizes the importance of robust competition in the food, pharmacy, and retail sectors. Increased competition can lead to lower prices for consumers and a level playing field for businesses. Rural areas can be particularly impacted by limited competition in the food industry, resulting in food deserts and fewer healthy choices for consumers. The Committee reminds the FTC of its existing statutory authorities to promote competition and ensure all market participants are treated fairly.
Chris Jones, Main Street Competition Coalition lead and Chief Government Relations Officer of the National Grocers Association, said "Congress is telling the FTC to use the antitrust tools it already has to lower prices and restore fair competition in food, pharmacy, and retail. The Robinson-Patman Act exists for exactly these markets, and this is the moment to use it when the Trump Administration is putting affordability at the top of its agenda."
The House is expected to vote on the legislation this week, ahead of the MLK Day recess, with the Senate planning to take up the measure before the end-of-month government funding deadline.
