Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the developments in the Middle East (28.02.2026)

The Greek Government is closely monitoring developments in Iran and the broader Middle East with concern.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has activated the Crisis Management Unit to provide consular assistance to those in need, while Greek diplomatic missions in the region remain on alert.

Greek citizens are advised to be particularly cautious and to keep in contact with our Embassies and Consulates. If needed, a coordinated repatriation operation will take place.

We attach particular importance to safeguarding freedom of navigation in the region.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs is in constant contact with Foreign Ministers of allied countries regarding the developments. It is widely acknowledged that efficient monitoring of Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programme, to ensure that Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon, constitutes a necessary condition for stability and peace in the region.

The protection of civilians, as well as respect for International Law and for the rights of citizens, must be a primary concern.

All relevant issues will be discussed at the extraordinary meeting of the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence this afternoon.
