19 May 2026

Jewellery valuers, students, international guests and wider trade professionals came together in Birmingham last weekend (16-17 May) for two days of learning and networking at the National Association of Jewellers Valuers' Conference, hosted by the Institute of Registered Valuers (IRV).

The 2026 Valuers' Conference, supported once again by headline sponsor Bonhams, marked a standout year for the event, with a 20% rise in attendance and a record number of students participating, demonstrating the growing momentum behind education, professional development and future talent within the valuation community.

Held at Edgbaston Park Hotel, the two-day event brought together established professionals and those entering the industry, reinforcing the Conference's role as a cornerstone event for knowledge-sharing, collaboration and career development.

A world-class speaker programme

Saturday's programme featured a line-up of internationally recognised experts, delivering insight across jewellery history, gemmology, diamonds and watches:

  • Francesca Cartier Brickell explored the legacy of the Cartier family and its continued influence on the jewellery world.
  • Jonathan Darracott, Bonhams' Global Head of Watches, shared expert perspectives on the watch market.
  • Mark Cullinan offered a unique perspective on the diamond sector, drawing on decades of industry experience.
  • Sarah Caldwell Steele provided specialist insight into jet and parallels between the history of the jet trade and the current diamond market.
  • Dr Yun Luo from GIA explored the impact of fluorescence on diamonds.
  • Justin K Prim delivered an engaging exploration of gemcutting through the ages.

Celebrating achievement and community

Day one concluded with a gala dinner, where delegates gathered to celebrate professional achievement and connection across the sector. The evening included the presentation of the prestigious David Wilkins Award to Sammantha Maclachlan, which recognises outstanding contributions to the valuation profession, alongside the celebration of new IRV Members and Fellows.

Hands-on learning and practical insight

On the second day, delegates immersed themselves in an expanded programme of interactive workshops and masterclasses, designed to provide practical, hands-on learning in key areas of valuation practice.

Sessions covered a wide range of topics, including auctioneering and estimating strategies, valuing Asian jewellery, coloured gemstone pricing, gem cutting science, identifying complex gem materials and watch valuation, giving attendees the opportunity to deepen their expertise and apply knowledge in real-world scenarios.

The extended workshop format encouraged meaningful discussion, peer learning, and direct engagement with subject-matter experts.

A growing and evolving profession

The strong uplift in attendance, combined with unprecedented student participation, signals a positive and progressive future for the valuation profession, with increased engagement from emerging talent alongside continued commitment from experienced professionals.

IRV Chair Sammantha Maclachlan comments,

"This year's Conference has been truly exceptional. Seeing such a significant increase in attendance, particularly from students, is incredibly encouraging for the future of our profession. It highlights the importance of continuing to invest in education, mentorship and accessible learning opportunities.

"The calibre of speakers, alongside the willingness of attendees to share knowledge and experience, is what makes this event so valuable. It reinforces the strength of our community and the shared commitment to maintaining the highest standards in valuation."

Across the weekend, the Conference once again demonstrated the importance of bringing professionals together to exchange ideas, challenge thinking and advance best practice, ensuring the profession remains relevant, informed and forward-looking.
