Washington, D.C.--U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) issued the following statement after the Senate's passage of the Laken Riley Act, of which he is a co-sponsor. The Senate passed the measure by a vote of 64-35.
"Laken Riley should have recently turned 23 and should be finishing nursing school to fulfill her life's passion of taking care of others. Instead, she was murdered in cold blood by an individual who should have never been in the United States in the first place. I continue to offer my deepest condolences to Laken's family, friends and community in Georgia for their loss. Overwhelming passage of her namesake legislation ensures those in the country illegally who commit acts of theft will be promptly detained and held until they are removed from the country so they cannot commit further crimes against Americans."
The Laken Riley Act would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest individuals in the country illegally who commit theft, burglary, larceny or shoplifting offenses and would mandate they are detained until they are removed from the United States so they cannot reoffend and commit further crimes. This legislation would also ensure states have standing to bring civil actions against federal officials who refuse to enforce immigration law or who violate the law.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill on January 7, 2025. It now goes to the President.
