NEWS RELEASE - July 16, 2026

Finding Hope and Healing Through ARH Our Lady of the Way's Senior Care Program

Martin, KY - The Senior Care program at ARH Our Lady of the Way is helping older adults navigate mental health challenges and regain a sense of stability, connection, and independence.

The program provides specialized behavioral healthcare through a multidisciplinary team that works closely with each patient to address individual needs and treatment goals. While the program commonly supports patients experiencing depression, anxiety, and grief, services are also available for individuals with other mental health diagnoses.

Senior Care reopened in late 2023 after the previous program closed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since reopening, the program has consistently served older adults throughout the community in a welcoming environment designed around their unique experiences and challenges.

"The Senior Care Program reflects the mission of ARH to meet the needs of every generation and provide a special type of social and mental care that often restores hope and dignity," said Kathy Moore, Chief Clinical Nursing Officer of ARH Our Lady of the Way. "Our team, led by Allison Hyden, is highly active in the community and puts their hearts into providing compassionate care for our elders. It's a celebration when a patient graduates from the program and has a stronger sense of purpose and healing."

Within the past month, three patients have graduated from the program, meaning they successfully met their treatment goals and were ready to be discharged. Graduates and current patients have expressed appreciation for the compassionate care they receive and the program's focus on treating each person with dignity and respect.

The program's relationships with patients often continue beyond discharge. Staff members regularly check in with graduates, and many former patients call the office simply to talk and share updates about their lives.

In addition to behavioral health treatment, patients participate in activities that encourage creativity, socialization and personal fulfillment. Completed coloring pages are proudly displayed throughout the office, while tomato plants and flowers planted by patients earlier in the season continue to grow.

Through clinical care, meaningful activities and ongoing support, the Senior Care program at ARH Our Lady of the Way remains committed to helping older adults improve their emotional well-being and quality of life.

About Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH)
Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) traces its roots back to 1955, when the United Mine Workers of America opened the Miners Memorial Hospital system - a network of 10 hospitals dedicated to providing care throughout the coalfields of eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia. Seventy years later, ARH has grown into a 14-hospital not-for-profit health system that serves more than 500,000 residents of central Appalachia each year. ARH hospitals in Barbourville, Harlan, Hazard, Hyden, Martin, McDowell, Middlesboro, Paintsville, Prestonsburg, West Liberty, Whitesburg, and South Williamson in Kentucky, and Beckley and Hinton in West Virginia, ensure that residents, tucked away in even the most remote areas, can access the highest quality of care without traveling hours from home. ARH's hospitals, clinics, multi-specialty physician practices, home health agencies, home medical equipment stores, retail pharmacies, and medical spas boast more than 6,700 employees with a network of more than 1,300 providers, making it the single largest employer in southeastern Kentucky and the third-largest private employer in southern West Virginia.
