As New Yorkers continue to struggle with high energy costs, worsening highway traffic, and the health burdens of harmful air pollution, Governor Kathy Hochul missed a major opportunity in today's State of the State address to put forward a plan to make transportation cleaner, healthier, and more affordable for all. The ElectrifyNYcoalition calls on Governor Hochul and the Legislature to prioritize clean transportation, including the Clean Deliveries Act, in Albany this year.
Recent actions taken by the federal administration send an alarming message: there is no limit to how far this White House will go to keep Americans shackled to the fossil fuel industry. With Washington beholden to polluters, and transportation being the second largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in New York, it is more important than ever for Governor Hochul to stand up and improve the lives of millions of New Yorkers by accelerating the state's shift to zero-emission vehicles and reducing the number of dirty trucks on our roads. We cannot let federal recklessness be an excuse for state inaction, especially when the well-being of our communities and the future of our planet hang in the balance.
Governor Hochul has demonstrated a willingness to stand up to this federal administration when it comes to New Yorkers' transportation priorities by boldly defending congestion pricing against the federal government's attempts to kill the program. She must take the same approach in holding firm against industry pressure and federal rollbacks to protections, like the Advanced Clean Trucks regulation, and defending and advancing New York's clean transportation sector.
By standing up for these vital programs, as well as enacting progressive policies like the Clean Deliveries Act, the Governor can demonstrate that New York won't back down when it comes to clean air, environmental justice, and a sustainable transportation future for all New Yorkers.
ElectrifyNYis a statewide coalition of advocates for environmental justice, public transportation, social justice, and good jobs fighting for a clean, equitable electric transportation future for New York. Our work aims to improve the environment and public health outcomes for the communities most affected by the negative impacts of the transportation sector's dependency on fossil fuels.
