U.S. News & World Report today released its 2025 Best Graduate Schools rankings, showcasing a number of The University of New Mexico's graduate programs. UNM has several programs in the top 100 with Nursing Midwifery leading the pack at No. 10. Overall, 27 UNM colleges/schools and or programs were ranked in the top 100 either as graduate programs or survey-based rankings for various disciplines.
The rankings focus only on graduate programs, as opposed to other rankings released from U.S. News & World Report that focus on undergraduate and online programs. The publication releases rankings every year but focuses on different programs with each release.
University of New Mexico's high rankings in the six academic disciplines for which schools submit statistical surveys -- Business (both Full-Time and Part-Time), Education, Engineering, Law (both Full-Time and Part-Time), Medical (both Primary Care and Research), and Nursing (both MSN and DNP):
Academic Disciplines
Tier 1 - Best Medical Schools: Primary Care
Tier 3 - Best Medical Schools: Research
Law
Additional programs that were ranked but not in the top-100 include: Mechanical Engineering - #101 (tie); Best Law Schools - #107 (tie); Civil Engineering - #108 (tie); and Biomedical Engineering/Bioengineering - #124 (tie).
Each year, U.S. News & World Report ranks professional schools and programs in business, education, law, engineering, medicine and nursing. The Best Graduate Schools rankings in these areas are based on two types of data: expert opinion about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school's faculty, research, students and post-graduate outcomes for them.
Data for the rankings in the six disciplines came from statistical surveys and often from peer assessment surveys sent to academics and professionals in their respective fields, conducted in fall 2024 and early 2025. In some cases, data from these surveys was combined with third-party information.
In addition, U.S. News also released survey-based rankings for 11 other disciplines including Public Affairs, Public Health, Audiology, Healthcare Management, Nursing Anesthesia, Nursing Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, and Computer Science. The rankings are based on surveys of academic leaders at peer institutions.
Here are The University of New Mexico's high rankings in those fields:
Survey-based rankings
The big mover for UNM in the above rankings include Physical Therapy up 27 spots from No. 92 last year to No. 65 this year. Several other programs including Public Affairs, Computer Science and Speech Language Pathology moved up slightly from last year.
Today's survey-based rankings above exclude Economics, Psychology, English, History, Political Science, Sociology, Library and Information Studies, Clinical Psychology, Rehabiliation Counseling, and Veterinary Medicine.
