Save Now, Travel Later: Build a Smarter Summer Vacation Budget Without Breaking the Bank

COLUMBUS, Ohio - With Memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer just over a month away, many Ohio families have likely started to sketch out their summer adventures. With 90% of Americans planning to travel this year, the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Financial Institutions (DFI) reminds Ohioans that creating the perfect summer vacation starts with a solid financial plan that supports both fun and affordability.

Taking time to estimate what you're likely to spend can help you plan ahead while avoiding surprises. Recent travel data shows the average cost of a one-week U.S. vacation is about $1,991 per person, with transportation, lodging, meals, and entertainment making up the bulk of those expenses. Costs can add up quickly, especially considering domestic flights currently average around $290 per ticket, hotel stays average $259 per night, and daily food and entertainment can easily exceed $100 per traveler. Due to these high costs, travelers are reminded that Ohio is an affordable option for families, especially considering the wide range of fun activities that are available for all ages.

Interim Division Superintendent Ingrid White says there are ways to navigate vacation expenses so you can still make fun memories without digging yourself into a hole financially.

"Vacations should help you recharge, not set you back financially," White said. "A thoughtful, reasonable, and realistic plan empowers families with the information and guidance they need to enjoy their time away together without sacrificing their financial goals or creating financial stress later."

To help Ohioans prepare for the upcoming travel season, the Division recommends taking the following steps:

Consider sticking close to home: Ohio is called the Heart of it All for a reason. No matter what you're looking for in a summer adventure, we have it here in Ohio. From the sandy beaches on Lake Erie's shores to the beauty of Ohio Wine Country, and the outdoor adventures of the Appalachian Region - your next getaway might be closer than you think.

  • In 2025, Ohio's state parks were named the best park system in the nation, and we're one of only a few states to not charge an entrance fee to any of its state parks. With 76 parks across the state, most Ohioans live within 30 minutes of a free gold-medal winning adventure.
  • TourismOhio has curated a list of 75 free outdoor attractions for the warmer months highlighting arboretums, metroparks, and historical sites to explore without breaking the bank. This list is in addition to the over 70 free indoor attractions highlighted earlier this year.
  • Communities across Ohio are celebrating America-250 with once-in-a-lifetime celebrations, events, and programs with little-to-no charge.

Create a vacation savings plan: Estimate your total costs, including transportation, lodging, meals, activities, and include a small buffer for unexpected expenses. Setting aside money regularly or using automatic transfers can make it easier to reach your goal without straining your daily budget.

Choose a destination that matches your financial expectations and realities: Not every trip requires long flights or expensive resorts. Look for locations with free or low-cost attractions such as state parks, lakes, outdoor festivals, or community museums, or consider destinations within driving distance. Less touristy areas often offer the same amenities at a fraction of the price.

Plan early and stay flexible: Prices for flights and hotels are typically lower several months in advance. Traveling in early June, late August, or in the middle of the week can also reduce costs. Comparing fares, exploring alternative airports, or choosing to drive can also make a significant difference in the overall cost.

Trim everyday expenses to boost your travel fund: Preparing meals at home, canceling unused subscriptions, brewing coffee instead of buying it, or switching to generic brands can help to free up money quickly. Using budgeting apps to track savings also helps to ensure these dollars go directly toward your vacation.

Maximize travel rewards and cash-back programs: If used responsibly, loyalty points, airline miles, and cash-back rewards can reduce airfare, lodging, and rental car costs. Many travelers overlook points they've already earned that could make a meaningful difference.

Seek out free or low-cost activities: Many destinations offer complimentary museums, beaches, concerts, outdoor movie nights, walking tours, and nature trails. City tourism websites and local event calendars are great resources for discovering low- and no-cost entertainment options.

Build and stick to a realistic travel budget: Even when you're in vacation mode, it's important to keep expenses in mind. Plan daily spending limits and monitor expenses as you go. Packing essentials like sunscreen, medications, water bottles, or snacks before you leave your hotel room can help avoid paying inflated prices at tourist spots for food and other items.
