New Hours at City Impoundment Lot Begin Aug. 8

Starting Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, the City of Knoxville's Vehicle Impoundment Facility will implement new weekend hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Weekday hours Monday through Friday will continue to be 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The City's impoundment lot will continue to receive vehicles from Knoxville Police Department and Codes Enforcement 24 hours per day.

Staff members of the Fleet Services Department, which maintains the impoundment lot at 3407 Vice Mayor Jack Sharp Road, reviewed the days and times between July 1, 2025 and July 1, 2026, when the impound lot released vehicles to residents. They learned:

• There were 2,009 vehicles reclaimed from the impoundment lot.
• Monday was the most common day of retrieval, with 18.27 percent of vehicles reclaimed on this day.
• Tuesday and Friday were tied with 17.07 percent of retrievals
• Saturdays and Sundays saw 10.4 percent and 8.06 percent retrievals respectively - one weekday's worth spread over two days.

"When we looked at the numbers, we confirmed that the fewest number of vehicle releases occurred on Saturday and Sunday evenings," says Fleet Services Director Nicholas Bradshaw. "This change in hours reflects the City's goal to make data-based decisions and serve the public effectively and efficiently."

Reasons for impoundment include abandoned vehicles, parking violations (tow-away zones and illegal parking), police investigations or codes violations.

Owners coming to retrieve impounded vehicles must bring proof of vehicle ownership, proof of insurance, a government-issued picture ID and a licensed driver. Fees for towing and storage are due at the time of pickup; the impoundment lot accepts cash, Visa/Mastercard, company check, cashier's checks and money orders.
