Southeast Missouri State University and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) are partnering to offer a new summer camp designed to introduce high school students to healthcare careers and create a pathway to the SEMO-LECOM early acceptance medical school program.
The Emerging Medical Scholars Academy will take place July 27-30 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day on SEMO's campus. The camp is free to attend, and supplies and lunch are provided for all participants. Enrollment is limited to high school students graduating in 2027 or 2028.
The week-long experience will provide students with hands-on activities, interactive workshops and opportunities to explore a variety of healthcare professions. Participants will learn from SEMO faculty, healthcare professionals, and current students while gaining insight into educational pathways that can lead to careers in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, podiatry and other health-related fields.
I'M INTERESTED IN THE SEMO-LECOM PARTNERSHIP
The camp also serves as an introduction to LECOM's Early Acceptance Program. Through the partnership with LECOM's midwest campus at Mercy Southeast, students in the program could complete their clinical rotations in Cape Girardeau.
"The Emerging Medical Scholars Academy reflects SEMO and LECOM's commitment to expanding educational opportunities and strengthening the future healthcare workforce," said Lenell Hahn, executive director of enrollment strategy for Enrollment Management and Student Success. "By providing students with early exposure to medical careers, hands-on learning experiences, and mentorship from healthcare professionals, we are helping talented young people explore their potential and prepare for meaningful careers in medicine and related fields. We are proud to invest in the next generation of healthcare leaders."
The Emerging Medical Scholars Academy is part of SEMO's broader effort to provide experience-driven learning opportunities for students and expand access to healthcare education throughout the region.
