University of Alaska Fairbanks agricultural and natural resource researchers will give presentations on their work during two field days at Alaska's experiment farms in July.
UAF's Institute of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension invites farmers, gardeners and community members to tour the fields and farms and learn through presentations, tours and discussions at these free educational events.
Researchers at the Fairbanks Research Field Day, 2-6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, will discuss permafrost soils, vegetable variety trials, small-grain breeding research, feeding livestock, managing weeds in barley and using nematodes to manage root maggots. Guided tours of Georgeson Botanical Garden will be offered.
The Palmer Research Field Day is 2-6 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, at the Matanuska Experiment Farm, 1509 S. Georgeson Drive, Palmer. Many of the Fairbanks presentations will also be offered in Palmer, as well as sessions on using biochar to mitigate herbicides in soils, establishing mixed perennial plant communities and using kelp as a soil amendment.
During the last hour of the events, light refreshments will be served and researchers can answer questions.
