WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Angus King (I-ME) released the following statement amidst President Trump's current range of threats to constitutional norms:
"President Trump's recent actions-sending armed and masked ICE agents into our cities, including here in Maine, threatening peaceful protesters with a military response, insisting on taking control of Greenland with no rational basis for doing so, alienating our allies with unjustified and illegal tariffs, and weaponizing the government against his perceived enemies-all add up to the most dangerous assault on our economy, our democratic system, and our people since the Civil War.
"Stopping this will require meaningful engagement across the board-in the courts, the Congress (particularly the Republican majority), and, of course, the public.
"For my part, I intend to fight back by moving to curtail the budget of ICE until such time that they respect our Constitutionally-guaranteed rights (and take off the masks), stop his dangerous and illegal international adventurism, and rein in a government which seems to be based upon whim and vengeance rather than law and common sense."
