Hagåtña, Guam - The Chief Kepuha Monument stands tall once again as government leaders, community members, and civic organizations gathered today to rededicate the park and celebrate the successful installation of the new monument. The restoration was made possible entirely through community generosity, with no government procurement involved. Through a strong network of public-private partnerships, what was lost has now been restored-reminding us that when our people come together, we can rise stronger than before.
"Our people have been here for thousands of years. And living on an island that is prone to natural disasters, that has experienced war and famine, we have learned to use our history to become not just a people who survive-but a people who thrive," said Lieutenant Governor Josh Tenorio. "In many ways, Chief Kepuha is a symbol of that mission. The lifting up of this statue shows that when times are tough and the future is uncertain, we can rise. We can stand. And we can show our children the strength of this remarkable place we call Guam."
Governor Lou Leon Guerrero expressed her gratitude to the many partners who made the project possible and stated, "I want to say thank you to all the people who made this happen. Through your generosity, through your sense of pride and honor for our people, you made this happen."
Special recognition was given to master carver Greg Pangelinan, who donated the sinahi that now adorns Chief Kepuha, adding cultural and artistic significance to the monument.
