Emory launches Responsible AI website

The Emory AI team has launched a new Responsible AI (RAI) website, offering faculty, staff, students and health care teams a clear, accessible hub for guidance on the safe, ethical and effective use of artificial intelligence across the institution.

The site represents a major milestone in the university's enterprise-wide Responsible AI initiative, a multi-year effort led by the Emory AI Group with input from the Responsible AI Executive Governance Committee and partners across Emory University and Emory Healthcare.

Designed to be a centralized resource for the Emory community, the RAI website provides high-level guidance rooted in Emory's mission and principles, with plans to create specific recommendations for different user groups, including clinicians, researchers, students and communicators. Project leaders gathered extensive feedback from campus stakeholders as the site took shape.

A university-wide commitment

The launch underscores Emory's broader commitment to ensuring that emerging AI technologies are used thoughtfully, transparently and in ways that support academic excellence, patient care, operational effectiveness and institutional integrity.

"In recent years, Emory has significantly expanded its AI efforts through initiatives such as AI.Humanity, the Center for AI Learning and the Emory Empathetic AI for Health Institute," says Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer Nabile Safdar. "We've also established system-wide governance frameworks that balance innovation with safety and ethics."

"We drew on the experience and expertise of leaders pioneering the use of AI across Emory University and Emory Healthcare to create this site as a shared resource for our community," Safdar adds.

Campus leaders emphasize that responsible use of AI is essential not only for protecting data privacy and preventing unintended harm, but also for empowering faculty, students and staff to collaborate effectively with new technologies.

What's included

The newly launched site provides foundational guidance across several key areas of AI use:

  • Understanding data security responsibilities
  • Analyzing data
  • Information gathering
  • Content generation and proofing
  • Creating or editing multimedia
  • Disclosing the use of AI

These topic areas mirror the needs identified in Emory's AI governance conversations and ongoing training initiatives, including the university's series of Responsible AI webinars, where faculty and staff explored how AI can support - without undermining - accuracy, fairness and trust in communications, research and clinical work.

"We believe the site will serve as a starting point for anyone at Emory seeking clarity on how to use AI tools responsibly," says Melissa Sousa, corporate director of data and AI strategy. "As the landscape of AI capabilities is changing, so will our understanding of what constitutes responsible AI. Thus, this site will need to evolve, too. We encourage Emory students, faculty, researchers, providers, clinicians and staff to bring forward important issues where guidance might be needed, clarified or updated."

Faculty, staff and students can explore the new site, share feedback and engage with upcoming training opportunities as Emory continues building a culture of safe, ethical and innovative AI use.
