Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani chaired a new operational meeting of the Foreign Ministry's Crisis Unit - after the one convened on January 14 - to take stock of the situation in Iran following the protests that have affected the country.
The meeting was attended by the Italian Ambassadors to Iran, Israel, and the United States, as well as the Permanent Representative of Italy in Brussels, and the various relevant government agencies.
The Minister reiterated that the protection of Italian nationals should remain the highest priority and gave instructions to significantly reduce the number of staff serving there, who will therefore return to Italy very quickly.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to review the positions that would be taken in the coming days at European level regarding sanctions against Iran.
During the meeting, Minister Tajani also reiterated his instructions to the Ambassador in Tel Aviv to convey to the Israeli government the Italian government's firm indignation about the severe incident in the West Bank involving two Carabinieri officers serving at Italy's Consulate General in Jerusalem, announcing he would send a letter of protest to Foreign Minister Sa'ar.
