Reps. Scholten, Hinson Introduce New Legislation To Improve Access To Breast Cancer Screenings In Rural Communities

WASHINGTON, D.C.- In light of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, U.S. Representatives Hillary Scholten (D-MI-03) and Ashley Hinson (R-IA-X) are introducing bipartisan legislation to improve access to breast cancer screenings in rural communities. The Community Access to Treatment and Care for Health through Increased Testing Act (CATCH IT Act)would update the USDA's Community Facilities Grant Program by increasing the federal cost share by 25% for rural projects involving preventative health equipment, like mammogram machines, mobile health units, and early detection tools. The Community Facilities Grant Program provides loans and grants to develop essential community facilities in rural areas. An essential community facility is defined as a facility that provides an essential service to the local community for the orderly development of the community in a primarily rural area, and does not include private, commercial, or business undertakings.

"Early detection saves lives-plain and simple," said Rep. Scholten. "Every American in this country, no matter where they live, deserves easy and affordable access to regular breast cancer screenings. By providing additional federal funding to rural health centers, we can make that a reality. I am proud to be working across the aisle to introduce this critical legislation during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I look forward to getting it passed."

"Early detection gives hope a head start and saves lives. I'm very proud to help introduce bipartisan legislation that would surge federal investments in preventative health equipment, like mammogram machines and mobile cancer screening tools. I will continue working across the aisle to spread awareness about the importance of early detection and increase access to health care in Iowa's rural communities," said Rep. Hinson.
