Army nears 100,000 Wickr users as secure communications platform expands across the force

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Army is approaching a major milestone as it nears 100,000 registered users on Wickr, a secure communications platform designed to meet some of the military's most stringent operational requirements. The rapid growth reflects the Army's continued commitment to strengthening secure, agile and resilient information exchange across the force.

Wickr meets U.S. government security standards, including Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program High and Department of Defense Impact Levels 4 and 5, ensuring the platform can support sensitive government workloads. Built for the Department of War, defense organizations, and allies and partners, Wickr is engineered to deliver trusted communication capabilities in contested and dynamic environments.

Key Capabilities Driving Adoption

  • End-to-End Encryption: Protects messages, calls and files so only intended recipients can access them.
  • Secure Collaboration: Enables one-on-one and group chats, audio and video conferencing, and secure screen and file sharing.
  • Data Retention Controls: Supports mission-specific retention requirements for sensitive government information.
  • Ephemeral Messaging: Allows users to set expiration timers and utilize burn-on-read features for enhanced privacy.
  • Integrations: Connects seamlessly with mission tools such as the Android Tactical Assault Kit and Active Directory.

Effective Application of Wickr

Stemming from the success of the initial pilot with XVIII Airborne Corps, Army Wickr has further scaled to more users to continually assess the capability for wider use.

During 2025 in the Phillippines, U.S. Army Pacific's 25th Infantry Division used Wickr to securely coordinate with partner forces, maintaining end-to-end encryption despite using equipment and network differences. The tool enabled interoperability, including message translation between Filipino troops using foreign issued equipment and American forces, eliminating a common hurdle in multinational operations.

Strengthening the Information Advantage

Secure, timely communication remains essential to every warfighter. Information dominance enables commanders to maintain situational awareness, synchronize forces and adapt rapidly to evolving operational conditions. As the Army continues to modernize its digital infrastructure, Wickr expands the secure communication envelope to wherever Soldiers operate - whether in garrison, in training or forward deployed.

The platform's growth underscores the Army's commitment to equipping Soldiers with trusted tools that enhance readiness and mission success. With Wickr, the force gains a secure, flexible and resilient communication capability designed for the demands of modern warfare.

Wickr is more than a messaging tool - it is an operational asset. As the Army approaches 100,000 users, the platform is becoming a critical component of the service's secure communications ecosystem, ensuring Soldiers can share information when and where it matters most.
