Texas recognizes March 21 as Breast Reconstruction Advocacy and Education Day. Designated by the Texas Legislature in 2017, the observance honors those affected by breast cancer and highlights recovery options for survivors.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis for women in Texas. In 2025, an estimated 22,039 women in the state were diagnosed with breast cancer, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (PDF).
Aparna Aavula, a contract administration manager for HHSC Behavioral Health Services, was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2023.
"The tumor was found through my annual mammogram," Aavula said. "It was quite large."
Aavula underwent treatment for invasive ductal carcinoma, the most common form of breast cancer, during the next nine months. This included chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. She was declared cancer-free in December 2023.
"I'm proof that mammograms help in the early detection of breast cancer," she said.
Through its Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program, HHSC provides funding to clinics throughout Texas that provide screening and diagnostic services for women.
Women with a low income and no insurance who have been diagnosed with breast cancer may be eligible for the Medicaid for Breast and Cervical Cancer program. The program covers cancer treatments and breast reconstruction for eligible women.
