Rep. Andrea Salinas' Statement on Iran War Powers Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Andrea Salinas (OR-06) released the following statement after voting in favor of the War Powers Resolution.

"I voted in favor of the War Powers Resolution to reassert Congress' role to decide when and how our nation goes to war. I will not stand idly by as President Trump continues to usurp that responsibility.

"Reckless military action cannot replace lawful decision-making, and our brave servicemembers and their families deserve better than being sent into conflict without a clear strategy. It is also deeply troubling that the President warned that 'a whole civilization will die' in reference to further strikes in Iran. That kind of rhetoric raises serious concerns about his judgment and the profound risk to innocent lives.

"The war is not only dangerous, but it is also costly. It's driving up prices at the gas pump and costing taxpayers $2 billion a day. Those dollars would be better spent lowering costs and supporting American families than funding an open-ended foreign war. President Trump has done nothing to better the lives of the American people - he has only made life worse.

"As a Member of Congress, we have to do our job to uphold the Constitution and hold the President accountable when he abuses his power. I am extremely disappointed that just one Republican joined us in our Congressional duty to hold the Trump Administration accountable. We must act now to maintain Congress' authority and bring this unauthorized war to an end. A ceasefire is not enough."
