CARNEGIE, PA - Today, Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17) released a video ahead of the three-year anniversary of Norfolk Southern's toxic train derailment in East Palestine, just across the border from Beaver County, PA. In the video, Congressman Deluzio outlines his longstanding fight for rail safety, the opposition from the powerful corporate railroad lobby, and the opportunity for President Trump and Vice President Vance to work with him to push the Republican-controlled Congress to pass historic rail safety legislation.
In the video, Congressman Deluzio says:
"We have to make rail safer and not shy from a righteous fight for our safety. The way I see it, this is a battle of corporate power vs. the rest of us who live or work around the tracks. I am in this fight for as long as it takes...
"And to President Trump and Vice President Vance: You and your party control every lever of power in Washington today. One word from you, and you could get the Republican-led Congress to pass the strongest rail safety legislation in history. So why won't you do it? It's been three years. It's time to make rail safer. Let's get it done."
Congressman Deluzio leads the Railway Safety Act in the House of Representatives, where it enjoys bipartisan support. In the prior Congress, Vice President Vance was a co-lead on the Railway Safety Act in the Senate, alongside Senators Sherrod Brown, Bob Casey, and John Fetterman.
Congressman Deluzio is one of Congress' most dogged advocates for rail safety. Ever since the derailment, he has been leading the charge to pass a comprehensive rail safety bill that will make communities and workers safer. He serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and on the Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee. He co-hosted a roundtable with Republican Michael Rulli to discuss the fight for rail safety with rail workers nearby East Palestine, Ohio last summer.
