Siena University has received a transformational gift from Rosario "Sal" Ilacqua '50 that will advance business education, expand access to opportunity, and honor a life defined by humility, faith, and belief in the power of education.
"I'm proud to announce a transformational gift from Rosario 'Sal' Ilacqua '50 that will advance business education, expand access to opportunity, and honor a life defined by humility, faith, and belief in the power of education," said President Chuck Seifert. "Through this impactful gift, we will ensure that Sal's life and values live on, empowering students, strengthening the School of Business, and advancing Siena University's mission for generations to come."
A Life Shaped by Opportunity
Born in Albany to Italian immigrants, Sal Ilacqua proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II before enrolling at Siena on the GI Bill to study finance. The son of an uneducated bricklayer, he believed deeply that education should never be out of reach for those willing to pursue it.
After graduating in 1950, Sal moved to New York City and built a distinguished career as a globally respected oil analyst. He credited Siena with laying the foundation for his success. Though his professional life took him far from Loudonville and often around the world, his connection to Siena never faded. He even purchased a home for his parents around the corner from campus, ensuring Siena was never far from his daily life.
Sal passed away in 2012. Through his trust, he made Siena and the transformative power of education enduring pillars of his legacy.
Enduring Investments in Students
Sal's extraordinary act of philanthropy will support students in several lasting ways.
The School of Business Lecture Series will now bear his name. The Sal Ilacqua '50 Business Lecture Series brings accomplished alumni and industry leaders to campus each semester to share real-world insights, career guidance, and personal stories, strengthening professional networks and connecting students to the realities and opportunities of today's business world.
Deborah Kelly, J.D., associate professor of management and coordinator of the lecture series since 2005, emphasized the lasting impact of this support.
"The lecture series has always been about connection, between students and alumni, theory and practice, ambition and purpose," said Kelly. "This gift ensures that the series will thrive in perpetuity, continuing to inspire generations of Siena students with authentic stories of leadership and professional growth."
The gift will fund scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need, with preference for first-generation students. This reflects Sal's own journey and his conviction that education opens doors.
Additionally, Student Opportunity Funds within the School of Business will support students in advancing their academic study towards professional certification. These funds will reduce financial barriers associated with exam preparation materials and credentials such as the CFA.
"This extraordinary gift reflects both the mission of Siena University and the strategic priorities of the School of Business," said Rashmi Assudani, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Business. "Sal Ilacqua believed deeply in access, opportunity, and the transformative power of education. Through scholarships and opportunity funds, his legacy will directly support students as they pursue meaningful careers and contribute to the greater good. I am very grateful for his contributions."
A Legacy of Quiet Generosity
For the Ilacqua family, the gift reflects who Sal was at his core.
"Our uncle believed that education could change the trajectory of a life," the family shared. "When his nephew John passed away, Sal immediately stepped in to ensure John's two sons could pursue their education. That's who he was, quietly generous, deeply committed to Siena, and resolute in his belief that everyone deserves opportunity."
Through this gift, Sal Ilacqua's belief in access, excellence, and the power of education will continue to shape the lives of Siena students for generations.
