VCU ranks among top 16% in 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities
Virginia Commonwealth University was recently ranked among the top 16% of universities evaluated for the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities, which assesses 2,500 institutions worldwide based on research and academic performance indicators.
VCU was listed among the top 301-400 institutions in the rankings, which are published annually by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
The rankings reflect VCU's global prominence and international standing, according to Hernan Bucheli, Ed.D., vice president for strategic enrollment management and global initiatives at VCU.
"For students and families around the world, particularly across Asia, ShanghaiRanking carries significant weight as a measure of research strength, academic quality and institutional credibility," Bucheli said. "Its influence across East and Southeast Asia can shape how students, families, universities and governments assess institutions for global student mobility, while also serving as an important measure of research strength, scholarly impact and academic prestige."
On Tuesday, ShanghaiRanking published its 2026 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. It ranked 10 subjects at VCU, including education (Nos. 51-75), dentistry and oral sciences (76-100), clinical medicine (101-150), human biological sciences (151-200), pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences (151-200), psychology (151-200), public health (201-300), nursing (201-300), statistics (201-300) and management (201-300).
Additionally, VCU was ranked among the top 20% of U.S. News & World Report's 2026-27 list of Best Global Universities, published in June.
In that annual ranking, which assesses academic research and reputation, VCU ranked No. 400 (tie) out of 2,250 universities across 105 countries. Sixteen VCU subject areas were listed among the world's best, notably including gastroenterology and hepatology, which ranked among the top 4% (No. 8 out of 250) and clinical medicine, which ranked among the top 12% (No. 145 out of 1,250).
