BJS Releases Update on the NCVS Instrument Redesign: Full Implementation of New Instrument and Victimization Estimates from the Redesigned NCVS Instrument, 2024

The Bureau of Justice Statistics, in the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs, released Update on the NCVS Instrument Redesign: Full Implementation of New Instrument and Victimization Estimates from the Redesigned NCVS Instrument, 2024 today.

Update on the NCVS Instrument Redesign: Full Implementation of New Instrument provides an update on the implementation of the redesigned National Crime Victimization Survey, or NCVS-R, instrument. The report highlights key changes between the new, or redesigned, and legacy (NCVS-L) instruments and describes updates to the data processing steps. It also includes next steps for the redesigned instrument.

Victimization Estimates from the Redesigned NCVS Instrument, 2024 provides the first estimates from the NCVS-R instrument and examines differences in victimization estimates between the NCVS-R and the NCVS-L instrument.

BJS redesigned the NCVS and moved the new instrument into production in 2024 through a split-sample administration. Following the concurrent administration of the NCVS-L instrument and NCVS-R instrument in 2024, BJS fully transitioned to the NCVS-R in January 2025.
