Fall and Halloween Fun Starts Soon in Des Moines

Des Moines, Iowa - Friday, October 9, 2026 - Spooky season is almost here in Des Moines, and our Parks and Recreation department is gearing up for family-friendly Halloween fun later this month!

Get ready for trick-or-treating, outdoor adventures, Halloween celebrations, and monstrous memory-making this month!

Leaves are already changing at Grandview Park! Enjoy the vibrant colors, complete fall leaf crafts, and join our environmental educator on a short nature walk! - Learn More

Create some Halloween decorations of your own at Reichardt Community Recreation Center! Halloween Paint & Take invites young artists, ages 5 - 12, to create a frightfully fun paint-by-numbers Halloween scene. - Learn More

Celebrate Howl-ween with your pup at Reno Memorial Dog Park! Take part in Halloween activities and participate in the costume contest. The winners will receive free dog park permits for 2027! - Learn More

Find the great pumpkin hidden in Greenwood Park! Learn how to use a GPS device and use it to locate the great pumpkin along with other Halloween prizes hidden throughout the park. Limited spots available, register today! - Learn More

Halloween - Wednesday, October 31 @ 6 - 8 p.m.

As Trick-or-Treaters take to the sidewalks for city-wide Trick-or-Treating, we ask pedestrians to be cautious along roadways and in intersections and ask motorists to go slow, especially when traveling through neighborhoods. Have a safe evening and a happy Halloween!

The Fall fun continues through November with Fall Fest at Union Park, Parent's Night Out, and more. Whether you are going all out this Halloween season or looking to enjoy the calmer side of fall, Des Moines Parks and Recreation has plenty of activities to keep residents of all ages moving, social, and having fun all Fall and Winter long!

"We are excited to offer numerous options this fall to celebrate Halloween and participate in Fall fun," Recreation Manager Janis Steele said. "We've also got our day-to-day fitness programs, athletics, adapted programs, after-school options and more to bring recreation to our residents every day."
