Bowie State University has once again earned national recognition for excellence in online education, ranking No. 5 on the Forbes list of Best HBCUs With Online Degrees of 2026. The recognition highlights the university's commitment to providing accessible, high-quality academic programs that meet the needs of today's learners.
"This achievement reflects the university's continued investment in innovative online learning opportunities that empower students to achieve their educational and career goals," said Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, president of Bowie State University. Published by Forbes, the annual ranking evaluates historically Black colleges and universities that offer online bachelor's degree programs using an 18-point methodology that assesses factors including affordability, student-to-faculty ratio, graduation rates, student retention and institutional reputation.
Bowie State remained among the nation's top five online HBCUs, joining a distinguished group of institutions recognized for academic quality and student success.
The university offers a growing portfolio of online undergraduate, graduate and certificate programs designed for working professionals, adult learners, military-affiliated students and individuals seeking flexible learning options. Online bachelor's degree programs include computer science, computer technology, criminal justice, early childhood education and elementary education. Online graduate degree programs include educational leadership, computer science, information systems & sciences, reading education and culturally responsive teacher leadership. Certificate offerings include public health informatics, clinical pastoral counseling, project management and English for Speakers of Other Languages.
According to Forbes, HBCUs continue to provide strong academic programs, vibrant alumni networks and affordable pathways to degree completion. Students benefit from experienced faculty, comprehensive student support services and curricula aligned with workforce demands.
