Realign State Route 4 For Improved Safety

Calaveras County- Travelers on SR-4 from Angels Camp to Copperopolis will now experience a smoother ride with fewer curves.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and Calaveras County just completed phase 1 of the SR-4 Wagon Trail Realignment Project.

"It's projects like this that exemplify the power of collaboration and cooperation," said Grace Magsayo, Director of Caltrans District 10. "This milestone would not be possible without everyone working toward a common goal."

Improvements include:

• Widening, grinding and paving the roadway
• Removing many challenging curves
• Installing new culverts and animal crossings

Construction of phase 1 of the SR-4 Wagon Trail Realignment Project totaled $52 million in funding through various federal, state, and local sources. That includes nearly $6 million from Senate Bill 1 (SB 1), The Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017.

SB 1 provides $5 billion in transportation funding annually, for state and local agencies. Road projects progress through construction phases more quickly based on the availability of SB 1 funds, including projects that are partially funded by SB 1.
