Courtney Votes to Extend TPS for Haitian Immigrants

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) released the following statement after voting to pass the bipartisan H.R. 1689, which would extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants for three years until April 2029. The bill passed the House by a vote of 224-204.

"The humanitarian crisis in Haiti continues to reach unprecedented levels, and it is clear that Haitian TPS holders in the U.S., including many in eastern Connecticut, cannot safely return to the countries' current environment," Courtney said. "Haitian TPS holders make up a vital part of our communities and workforce, particularly in health care. TPS has bipartisan support and is still needed to provide a safe haven for Haitian recipients."

In 2025, Kristi Noem's Department of Homeland Security made the decision to terminate Haitian TPS under the claim that Haiti "no longer met the conditions for its designation for Temporary Protected Status." This is despite the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reporting that "the humanitarian crisis in Haiti is deteriorating at a steady pace."

On February 2nd, a U.S. District Court judge issued an order staying Secretary Noem's TPS termination decision. The case, Trump vs. Miot, is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court. In addition to supporting H.R. 1689 to extend Haitian TPS for three years, Courtney has joined an amicus brief in support of the case against the decision to terminate Haitian TPS.
