GAEPD considers many indicators in declaring a drought response, including precipitation, reservoir levels, streamflow and soil moisture. Many of these indicators have been below average levels since October 2025.
According to the National Drought Mitigation Center, Georgia currently has drought conditions statewide ranging from Moderate Drought (D1) to Exceptional Drought (D4). Forsyth County is currently classified as being in an Extreme Drought (D3), the second to worst drought level within the state.
