Traffic Impacts Related to the I-285/I-20 West Interchange Project

IMPORTANT: The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is currently working on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange Project, which includes interchange improvements and additional lanes. This project will impact motorists traveling in and around the City of South Fulton.

Throughout October, drivers should expect lane shifts, temporary ramp closures, and adjusted travel lanes on I-20 westbound as well as I-285 northbound and southbound. These changes will mainly affect the interchange area and nearby connecting ramps, including the loop ramp from I-20 eastbound to I-285 northbound and the future flyover ramp from I-20 westbound to I-285 southbound.

Some of the areas affected include:

1. Friday, October 17 to Friday, October 24 starting at 8 p.m.

Nightly lane closure at State Route (SR) 70/Fulton Industrial Blvd from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive

2. Friday, October 17 to Saturday, October 18 starting at 9 p.m.

I-20 East to I-285 North ramp closure after Exit 9 (SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive)

3. Friday October 17 to Monday, October 20 starting at 9 p.m.

I-20 East to I-285 South ramp closure after Exit 52A (SR 280/Hamilton E. Holmes Drive)

4. Friday, October 24 to Monday, October 27 starting at 9 p.m.

I-20 West to I-285 North ramp closure after Exit 49 (SR70/Fulton Industrial Blvd)

5. Friday, October 24 to Monday, October 27 starting at 9 p.m.

I-20 West to I-285 South ramp closure after Exit 49 (SR70/Fulton Industrial Blvd)

As part of the project, GDOT crews are building a flyover ramp from I-20 westbound to I-285 southbound. Initial construction activities include traffic shifts to accommodate the foundation work for the flyover ramp.

The community is advised to plan ahead, use alternate routes when possible, and allow extra travel time.
