08/01/2025 - Olympia 2045 – August 2025 Update

August 2025 update

Our comprehensive plan update is underway. The City is updating the plan using a phased, chapter by chapter approach. All chapters are currently in review. Please use the links below to follow the process and get involved in the chapters you're interested in - each chapter has a webpage with more detail and a timeline.

Here are upcoming public meetings, engagement opportunities, and information sharing updates:

Introduction Chapter

A revised Introduction Chapter has been issued and posted online. You may view it at https://engage.olympiawa.gov/olympia2045. Council's Land Use and Environment Committee (LUEC) reviewed the draft at its meeting on July 24, 2025. The LUEC recommended approval of the draft chapter with a few modifications discussed at the meeting. The chapter will be considered by City Council later in the fall, tentatively on September 16th.

Community Values & Vision

A draft of the Community Values and Vision chapter was posted online in mid-April. To view the draft, please visit engage.olympiawa.gov/values-vision2045. The City Council's Land Use and Environment Committee (LUEC) reviewed the draft at its meeting on July 24, 2025. The LUEC recommended approval of the draft chapter with a few modifications discussed at the meeting. The chapter will be considered by City Council later in the fall, tentatively on September 16th. The Social Justice and Equity Commission considered the chapter at its meeting on July 28, 2025.

Natural Environment

The City Council reviewed and accepted this draft chapter at its meeting on June 10, 2025. To view the draft, please visit engage.olympiawa.gov/values-vision2045.

Land Use & Urban design

A public hearing before the Planning Commission was held on July 21, 2025. Olympia Youth Council is scheduled for a briefing on August 20, 2025. The Land Use and Environment Committee is scheduled to review the chapter on August 28, 2025. The City Council is scheduled to review the chapter at a Study Session on September 16, 2025. Housing

A draft of the new Housing Chapter was released at the end of May for review and public comment. A briefing for the Social Justice and Equity Commission was on June 23, 2025. A public hearing before the Planning Commission is tentatively scheduled for August 18, 2025. Please visit engage.olympiawa.gov/housing2045 for updates.

Transportation

The City Council reviewed and discussed the draft chapter at its July 29, 2025 study session. You can watch a recording of that discussion on Legistar. The next step is for this chapter to be reviewed by the City Council for acceptance. You can review the most recent draft of the chapter on Engage Olympia at engage.olympiawa.gov/transportation2045.

Parks, Arts & Recreation

Utilities

Economy

Climate Change & Resiliency

Comprehensive Plan

Olympia 2045 is your opportunity to shape the City of Olympia's long-term vision and goals. Through this process we will update the City's Comprehensive Plan and address new or updated state requirements. The Olympia 2045 update will also consider population projections and resulting employment and housing needs, as our community is expected to grow by approximately 20,000 additional residents within 20 years. Comments will be accepted throughout the process and can be sent to [email protected].
