Passing lanes project on US 40 completed between Kremmling and Steamboat Springs

Grand County - The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor, Capital Paving and Construction of Englewood, completed the passing lane construction project on US Highway 40 between Kremmling and Steamboat Springs last week on May 8.

The road widening and paving, which began last year in May of 2024, was completed prior to having to shut down for winter season the first week in January 2025. Crews began work again earlier this spring at the end of April for the final stabilization requirements of seeding, mulching and laying out erosion blankets in the ditches.

The construction of the passing lanes, for both northbound and southbound travelers on US 40 just north of Wolford Mountain Reservoir, Mile Point 172 to MP 173, allows for safer transportation of commercial/freight trucks, motorists and cyclists by providing a stretch of highway with space and opportunity for faster vehicles to safely pass slower-moving traffic.

"This is a busy corridor with a lot of commercial, recreational and local traffic transiting through," said Jason Smith, CDOT's Regional Transportation Director. "This project enables motorists traveling in this area to pass safely."

The project is part of CDOT's 10-year plan for improvements in Grand County.

The following tips are to help you stay safe while traveling through maintenance and construction work zones.

• Do not speed in work zones. Obey the posted speed limits.
• Stay Alert! Expect the unexpected.
• Watch for workers. Drive with caution.
• Don't change lanes unnecessarily.
• Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.
• Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.
• Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.
• Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
• Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.
• Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.
• Be patient!
