Washington, D.C. - Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi announced that San Francisco will receive $9.2 million in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation. This federal funding will help fund the partial demolition and reconstruction of the century-old Presidio Yard bus maintenance facility.
"Thanks to the leadership of the Biden-Harris Administration, our nation's infrastructure is stronger than ever - and San Francisco continues to make progress in our mission to be a transit-smart city," Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi said. "The federal Department of Transportation grants announced for San Francisco will support reliable transit service in our City by modernizing Presidio Yard to improve maintenance and working conditions that will get Muni buses back into service sooner. This new facility will also provide sustainable infrastructure for a zero-emission bus fleet to reduce pollution and make our City cleaner and safer for our children."
"This grant helps us take a huge step towards the Presidio Yard Modernization Project that will build a state-of-the-art facility for our employees who work hard and are committed to get our customers where they need to go," said SFMTA Acting Director of Transportation Julie Kirschbaum. "We thank the U.S. Department of Transportation, Speaker Emerita Pelosi, our former Mayor London Breed and Senators Padilla and Butler for recognizing the need for this innovative project that will strengthen community connections across San Francisco."
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will receive $9.2 million to support efforts to rethink, rebuild and expand the current Presidio Yard site into a multi-level modern bus operations and maintenance facility with adjacent mixed uses. The project will provide needed space for a growing bus fleet, facilitate the transition to a battery electric fleet, improve the efficiency and timeliness of bus maintenance and repairs, improve working conditions for all staff and enhance resiliency to climate change and natural disasters. This funding was awarded to the Bay Area from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Grant Program in a competitive national selection process.
