Update on east-central Georgia brine operations

[Link]
Augusta, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will continue brine operations in east-central Georgia on Monday and Tuesday before winter weather potentially impacts the area.

Brine operations began at 7 a.m. Sunday. Brine is a solution of salt and water used to decrease the probability of freezing under certain conditions. All lane miles of I-20, I-16, and Bobby Jones Expressway have been brined in District 2 (east-central Georgia). Crews are nearly finished brining high-priority, multi-lane state routes throughout the district.

Georgia DOT crews will work to brine as many lower priority
state routes as possible before the storm gets here. Because this storm has the potential to impact District 2's entire 27-county area, our crews are spread out over a larger area than they were for the winter weather event earlier this month. With hundreds of additional lane miles in the potential impact area, we may not be able to treat every route before the storm arrives.

All district maintenance personnel are working 12-hour shifts until the event ends. Crews are staffed around the clock. Please note, brine operations could be delayed depending on weather conditions. The road temperature must be at least 20 degrees to successfully apply brine.

Please be aware of the brine trucks and know they must travel 40 mph to properly apply the treatment. Please pay attention and stay back at least 100 feet from the pickup truck trailing the brine truck.

All drivers in the district are asked to prepare to limit travel this week. Any wintry precipitation that falls could take several days to melt if current temperature forecasts verify. After the event starts, crews will be prepared to plow, salt, or brine roads as needed.
