That role was recently on full display as Union Pacific executed one of the largest military movements by rail, transporting equipment for a full Army division consisting of three brigades and approximately 12,000 soldiers.
The operation included 25 trains carrying military equipment between Fort Carson, Colorado, and Yermo, California, as part of a major Army training rotation designed to prepare soldiers and units for real-world operations. Items included combat vehicles, trucks, support equipment and supplies.
The first of 13 outbound trains departed in early June, with subsequent departures occurring every 48 hours through early July. Following the exercise, redeployment took place in August. In addition to returning equipment to Fort Carson, some assets were shipped to three separate depot locations.
"This effort demonstrates the scale, reliability and precision of rail transportation," said Jacque Bendon, senior vice president, Marketing and Sales, Union Pacific. "We're proud to work alongside our military partners to safely and efficiently move the vehicles, equipment and supplies needed for this critical training mission and the readiness of our nation's armed forces."
The shipments required extensive coordination among military and Union Pacific personnel and showcased rail's unique ability to handle complex military logistics. As Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern work to connect America's rail network from coast to coast, the operation highlights how a seamless transcontinental network will strengthen military readiness through greater agility, reliability and predictability for bases, manufacturers and ports across 43 states.
