Health science students to transform Smith Hall into ‘haunted hospital’

Health science students to transform Smith Hall into 'haunted hospital'

October 10, 2025

Healthcare students at Campbell are in for a scary experience, and it has nothing to do with midterms, finals, tough professors or the like.

Embracing the Halloween spirit, students on Oct. 15 will enter a transformed and hauntedSmith Hall, which will that day be known as the "HauntedHospital in the Creek."

It's all part of the latest Interprofessional Education event, encompassing students in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine. The event is part of the schools' annual program of offerings and, while Halloween themed, it's also one of the university's Interprofessional Case Study learning activities, which are offered several times a year, said Dr. Pamela Edwards, assistant dean for Interprofessional Education and chair and director, Catherine W. Wood School of Nursing.

It's a fun event wrapped in an important learning experience.

Students representing several healthcare programs at Campbell will create case studies and design unique health-related contributions, all with a frightening holiday theme. DO students, for instance, are assigned "mummy and burn treatment." Each discipline has been assigned a room in Smith Hall to decorate, and students, faculty and staff are invited to show up in costume.

Students in the Nursing, Physician Assistant, Public Health, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, Physical Therapy and Doctor of Pharmacy programs are the creators.

The event is from 8:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. and will include three groups of students - six interdisciplinary groups and 30 students per group. The rotation times are 8:30 to 11:15 a.m. for the first group, 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for the second group, and 3 to 5:45 p.m. for the third.
