City of West Hollywood Celebrates Disabilities Awareness Month in October

The City of West Hollywood and its Disabilities Advisory Board will recognize October as Disabilities Awareness Month. This year marks the 36^th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA is landmark civil rights legislation that works to increase access and opportunity for people with disabilities across society, including in the workplace.

Throughout the month of October, the City of West Hollywood will commemorate Disabilities Awareness Month with an educational initiative featuring John McCain, Justin Dart Jr., and Helen Keller, who were selected by the Disabilities Advisory Board. Educational banners featuring the three honorees will be displayed in the City Council Chambers during October to highlight their contributions to disability rights, advocacy, and inclusion.

The City will also host two events that connect community members with resources, promote disability awareness, and recognize individuals and organizations that have made a positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities.

On Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the City of West Hollywood and its Disabilities Advisory Board, in partnership with Cedars-Sinai, will host a free Disability Health & Wellness Fair, themed Blooming Without Limits, at the Plummer Park Community Center, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard. The theme reflects the event's focus on wellness, access to care, and empowering people with disabilities to thrive. The event will offer free health screenings and vaccines, including blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol checks, hearing and dental screenings, and flu, COVID-19, RSV, and pneumonia vaccines (the nasal spray flu vaccine will not be available). Community members can also access education and resources on brain health, nutrition, lung cancer, senior health, and emergency preparedness.

Appointments are encouraged, and walk-ins are welcome. Appointments can be made at myturn.ca.gov/scheduling by entering ZIP code 90046 and selecting Cedars-Sinai Pop-Up: Plummer Park Community Center. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Although not required, participants are encouraged to bring a form of identification to assist with registration.

On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, the City of West Hollywood will host the 28th Annual Disability Service Awardsbeginning at 5:30 p.m. at a special televised meeting of the Disabilities Advisory Board at the City's Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. The Disability Service Awards will also be broadcast live on WeHoTV on Spectrum Cable Channel 10 in West Hollywood and will also be livestreamed on the City's WeHoTV YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/wehotv and on the City's website at www.weho.org/wehotv; and streamed via the AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, AndroidTV, and Roku platforms by searching for "WeHoTV."

The City of West Hollywood's Disabilities Advisory Board was created in 1995 and is comprised of nine members. The Disabilities Advisory Board addresses issues affecting people with disabilities, including ADA compliance, transportation, housing, access to City government and services for people with disabilities, and makes recommendations to the West Hollywood City Council relative to the adoption of programs, policies, or ordinances of benefit to the constituency.
