On behalf of the entire Government and the people of Lithuania, Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė congratulated the Federal Republic of Germany, a close partner and ally of Lithuania, on the occasion of Unity Day. The unification of Germany thirty-five years ago was a decisive event that contributed to the collapse of the communist regime in Europe. In the Prime Minister's greeting it is noted that this was a historic turning point which changed not only the destiny of Germany, but also of Lithuania and of the whole of Europe.
"The ideals of unity, freedom and democracy, for which we fought at the time, remain today a firm foundation of our lives. Yet present challenges remind us that defending these values requires more determined action than ever, as well as unity of the international community, the European Union and NATO.
In the face of Russia's brutal war, we are grateful for Germany's steadfast support for Ukraine, which today is defending not only the freedom of its citizens but also the future of the entire democratic world. Ukraine must prevail, for that is the only way can we be sure of our own future and security, and that of the whole of Europe. We must do everything in our power to make this a reality as soon as possible," the Prime Minister writes in her letter to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The Lithuanian Prime Minister expressed her delight that Lithuania and Germany are bound by a long-standing friendship, whose importance is especially evident today.
"We sincerely value Germany's responsibility for the security of our region and its historic decision to deploy a combat-ready brigade in Lithuania. This will further strengthen the partnership between our countries and our peoples. The newly-formed Lithuanian Government stands ready to work closely with Germany in all areas," the Prime Minister's greeting reads.
The Prime Minister wished the people of Germany and the Federal Chancellor peace, prosperity and well-being, and expressed her confidence that the partnership between the two countries will continue to grow, while their shared goals will lead to a safer and fairer future.
