Council has recently undertaken independent dust monitoring at the Bairnsdale Landfill as part of its ongoing commitment to workplace health and safety.
Monitoring identified the presence of respirable crystalline silica dust in some operational areas. These areas are not part of the operation open to the public.
The site is safe for the public.
Crystalline silica (quartz) is a naturally occurring mineralcommonly found in soil and rock in this area of East Gippsland. It can also be in stone, brick, concrete and othermaterials unloaded at the landfill.
In response to the test results,Council has implemented additional dust control measuresand is arranging health monitoringfor potentially exposed employees.
Follow-up monitoring and testing to verify the effectiveness of control measures will be implemented.
Council will also be reaching out to former landfill employees directly to advise them of this testing and outline what supports are available.
If you are a former employee or contractor and have queries, please contact us on 51539500 or [email protected].
