Following the death of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, on Dec. 29, President Joe Biden designated Thursday, Jan. 9, as a National Day of Mourning to honor Carter's contributions and legacy. Although Jan. 9 will be observed as a holiday for most federal employees, it is not recognized as a national holiday. This means private businesses and non-federal workplaces are not required to close. The Federal Reserve announced that on Thursday, January 9, 2025, Federal Reserve Financial Services will operate normally. Reserve Bank cash offices will fulfill financial institution orders for currency and coin according to normal operating procedures. As you consider your operations tomorrow, please be aware, the National Day of Mourning does not apply to private institutions and is not considered a federal holiday for them.
