CANYON, Texas - The West Texas A&M University Symphonic Band will offer an on-campus concert before embarking on a regional tour.

The Symphonic Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall on WT's Canyon campus. Admission is free; call 806-651-2840.

"The Symphonic Band comprises the most outstanding performers in the School of Music," said Don Lefevre, associate professor of music and director of bands. "Our special guest, Dr. James Barger, will make a wonderful addition to these talented student musicians."

The concert will feature "Royal Welch Fusiliers" by John Philip Sousa, the finale from Symphony No. 4 in F Minor by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Concerto for Alto Saxophone by Steven Bryant, "Fantastic Dreams" by Frank Ticheli, "Un Cafécito" by Dennis Llinás, and "Flying Jewels" by James M. David.

The Bryant concerto will feature Dr. James Barger, associate professor of saxophone. Dr. Russell Teweleit, professor of music education and conductor of the Concert Band, will conduct the Llinás work.

The Symphonic Band has performed at the College Band Directors National Association, Carnegie Hall, and 16 times at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention. It was the recipient of WT's Presidential Order of the Silver Buffalo in 2016 and 2024.

Its spring tour will include performances at 2;30 p.m. Feb. 24 at Midland High School and at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at Legacy High School in Midland; at 7:45 a.m. Feb. 25 at Permian High School and 4:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at Odessa High School in Odessa; and at 8 a.m. Feb. 26 at Lubbock Cooper High School in Lubbock and 11:30 a.m. Feb. 26 at Frenship High School in Frenship.

Fostering an appreciation of the arts is a key component of the University's long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.

That plan is fueled by the historic One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which reached its initial $125 million goal 18 months after publicly launching in September 2021. The campaign, which is now winding down, has raised more than $175 million.
